What is this Notification About?

  • Southern Railway is inviting online applications from eligible candidates.
  • The applications are for Apprenticeship Training under the Apprentices Act, 1961.
  • Training will be given in different Trades (like Fitter, Welder, Electrician, etc.) at Divisions / Workshops / Units under Southern Railway.
  • This is only training, not a permanent job.

Who Can Apply for Southern Railway Apprentice (Eligibility by Location)?

  • Only candidates who live in areas under the Southern Railway region can apply.
  • Eligible Locations:
    • Entire State of Tamil Nadu
    • Entire Union Territory of Puducherry
    • Entire State of Kerala
    • Entire Union Territories of Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep Islands
    • Only two districts of Andhra Pradesh: SPSR Nellore and Chittoor
    • Only one district of Karnataka: Dakshina Kannada

Important Notes for Southern Railway Apprentice

  • This is only Apprenticeship Training, not employment.
  • There is no job guarantee after completing training.
  • The apprenticeship contract will end after training.
  • However, in future recruitment for Level-1 posts, 20% of vacancies may be filled by giving preference to:
    • Candidates who have completed Apprenticeship training in Railways (CCAAs).
    • Candidates who hold a National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC).
  • In short: This notification is only for training in Southern Railway. You will learn skills, get a certificate, but job is not guaranteed.

Trades for Southern Railway Apprentice

  • Apprentices will be engaged in the following trades.
    • The slots (vacancies) available in different trades, with category-wise breakup (reservation for SC, ST, OBC, EWS, and UR), in various units of Southern Railway are provided in the official notification for the reference of candidates.
  • This means: Multiple trades such as Fitter, Welder, Electrician, Machinist, Carpenter, Painter, Mechanic, Wireman, Turner, and others will be offered.
  • The detailed number of seats in each trade, along with reservation, is given in a tabular format in the official notice.

Standard of Physical Fitness / Medical Examination

To be eligible for apprenticeship, candidates must meet the minimum physical fitness standards mentioned in Schedule-II of the Apprenticeship Rules, 1992 (with updates from time to time). At the time of document verification, candidates will have to provide a medical certificate in the prescribed format, signed by a certified medical authority.

Eligibility of Persons with Benchmark Disability (PWD)

According to the Ministry of Law and Justice, Government of India, as per Gazette Notification No. 59 dated 28th December 2016:

  • The reservation for Persons with Disabilities (PWD) has been increased from 3% to 4%.
  • This applies to five categories of benchmark disabilities.
  • Section 34(1) and The Schedule (Clause ZC of Section (2)) of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 defines what comes under benchmark disability and also explains the different types of disabilities.

Disability Certificates
  • Candidates who want to avail reservation benefits must submit a valid Disability Certificate issued by a Competent Authority (Medical Board constituted by the Central or State Government).
  • If selected, such certificates may undergo verification or re-verification by the competent authority.
Eligibility for Reservation
  • Only those persons who have at least 40% benchmark disability will be eligible for reservation and relaxation benefits.
  • Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) who are shortlisted for Document Verification must submit their Disability Certificate in the prescribed format (Form V, VI, or VII) as per Rule 18(1) of the Gazette Notification (dated 14 March 2024) under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Rules, 2017.

Validity of Old Certificates
  • Disability certificates issued earlier under the Persons with Disabilities Act, 1995 (now repealed) will still be valid until the expiry period mentioned in them.
  • Important Note for PwBD Candidates:
    • While filling the application form, candidates must carefully select their correct PwBD sub-category (such as LD – Locomotor Disability, HI – Hearing Impairment, VI – Visual Impairment, MD – Multiple Disabilities) exactly as mentioned in their Disability Certificate.
    • No change of sub-category will be allowed later.
    • At the time of document verification, candidates must present the same certificate from the competent authority as declared in their application form.

Minimum Academic/Technical Qualification

As per the Apprentices Act 1961, the following qualifications are required:

Fresher Category
  • Fitter, Painter & Welder: Passed 10th Class (minimum 50% aggregate) under 10+2 system or equivalent.
  • Medical Laboratory Technician (Radiology, Pathology, Cardiology): Passed 12th Class (minimum 50% aggregate) with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
Ex-ITI Category
  • Trades: Fitter, Machinist, MMV, Turner, Diesel Mechanic, Carpenter, Painter, Welder, Wireman, Advance Welder, Plumber, Draughtsman (Civil), Mech. R&AC:
    • Passed 10th Class (minimum 50% aggregate) under 10+2 system or equivalent.
    • Passed ITI course in relevant trade from a Government-recognized ITI.
    • Must have certificate issued by NCVT/SCVT.
Electrician
  • Passed 10th Class (50% aggregate) with Science.
  • ITI certificate in relevant trade.
Electronics Mechanic
  • Passed 10th Class (50% aggregate) with Science (Physics, Chemistry) and Mathematics.
  • ITI certificate in relevant trade.
Secretarial Assistant & Stenographer (English)
  • Passed 12th Class.
  • ITI certificate in relevant trade.
Information & Communication Technology System Maintenance
  • Passed 10th Class.
  • ITI certificate in relevant trade.
COPA/PASSA
  • Passed 10th Class (50% aggregate).
  • National Trade Certificate in “Computer Operator and Programming Assistant.”

  • Candidates with prior Apprenticeship, Engineering, Diploma, or 1+ year training/job experience are not eligible.

Period of Training for Southern Railway Apprentice

Fresher Category
  • Welder: 1 Year 3 Months
  • Fitter & Painter: 2 Years
  • Medical Lab Technician: 1 Year 3 Months
Ex-ITI Category
  • Duration as per Apprentices Rules 1992 (rebate will be given based on ITI trade).

Stipend (Monthly) for Southern Railway Apprentice

  • Fresher (10th): ₹6000/-
  • Fresher (12th): ₹7000/-
  • Ex-ITI: ₹7000/-
Additional benefits
  • 2nd year: 10% increase in stipend.
  • 3rd year: 15% increase in stipend.
  • Training already done in recognized institutions will be considered for stipend calculation.

Age Limit (as on notification date) for Southern Railway Apprentice

  • Minimum Age: 15 years
  • Maximum Age:
    • 22 years for Freshers/ Ex-ITI
    • 24 years for MLT
  • Relaxation:
    • OBC (NCL): +3 years
    • SC/ST: +5 years
    • PwBD: +10 years
    • PwBD + OBC: +13 years
    • PwBD + SC/ST: +15 years

Reservation Documents for Southern Railway Apprentice

  • SC/ST candidates must produce valid caste certificate.
  • OBC candidates must produce Non-Creamy Layer certificate (valid for current year) + self-declaration.
  • PwBD candidates must produce Disability Certificate from competent authority.

Mode of Selection for Southern Railway Apprentice

Selection will be based on Merit List prepared as follows:

  • Fresher: Marks in 10th (converted to 200 marks).
  • Ex-ITI: 10th marks (converted to 100) + ITI marks (converted to 100). Total = 200 marks.
  • MLT: 12th marks (Physics, Chemistry, Biology & Maths) converted to 200.
  • Other rules:
    • 50% aggregate required in qualifying exam (except SC/ST/PwBD).
  • Tie-breaking:
    • Older candidate will be preferred.
    • If DoB is same → candidate who passed earlier will be selected.

Exam and Processing Fee Southern Railway Apprentice

  • Application Fee: ₹100/- (Non-Refundable)
  • No Fee for SC/ST/PwBD/Women candidates
  • Payment through Online Mode only.

Engagement & Contract for Southern Railway Apprentice

  • Selected candidates will be engaged in the unit of their choice, subject to vacancies.
  • Must sign Apprenticeship Contract under the Apprentices Act 1961.
  • If candidate is a minor, the guardian must sign the contract.
  • No withdrawal allowed once training starts.
  • False information → immediate disqualification.

Important Instructions for Southern Railway Apprentice

  • Railway administration’s decision is final.
  • No guarantee of employment after training.
  • 20% of vacancies in direct recruitment may be filled by preference to Course Completed Act Apprentices (CCAAs) with NAC certificate.
  • Candidates must arrange own accommodation.
  • Only recognized Board/Institutes qualifications accepted.
  • Candidates must strictly follow Railway rules and regulations.
  • Absence during training → refund of stipend & training cost.
